Day Four: 10:20pm July 9th 2005 - Jane ain't looking so good. It's only been a few days that she's been on the meds we found. Chris said he's never really seen an infection like this before, but that all the symptoms make it seem like it's the flu. The worst part about this is that the storm wiped out the electrical grid, martial law was enacted and the national guard hasn't been through here in a month or more at this point. The first few days after the storm hit, the national guard enforced strict curfew limits. But with them gone, there isn't really anyone holding us back from leaving. I think maybe we just don't want to leave just yet. I feel like we're stuck here and with no access to a medical facility...I don't want to tell Chris...and he probably already knows...but I just don't think Jane's going to make it much longer at this pace. Whatever kind of infection is in her blood, it sure isn't nice.

With nothing else to do I can't help but think about everything. Think of the past, the future, everything. What my house looks like now. What would happen to me if I got sick in a situation like this. I always hated hospitals as a kid, and even as an adult. Mom would have to drag me by my wrist to go to a doctors appointment unless I got to miss school, then I could deal with it a little more. Before the storm if you were sick you could just get a prescription from your doctor, take a few days off of work or school...It could be a mini vacation from the normal day-to-day of life. But now something as simple as a fever could kill you and a hospital could be the difference between life and death.

Every day that passes it becomes even more clear that we're in this alone. A government that we payed taxes into...that we pledged allegiance to every day in school, is just going leave us like this? It's bullshit. Until we figure out what our next move is we'll just sit here in this Athletic Store and drink cheap hot wine and eat room temperature canned food. I hope this passes soon...
